MANAGEMENT TEAM

Tom Fanning Director | Epitaxial Technology

Tom Fanning is well-recognized leader in the semiconductor industry with over 19 years epitaxial crystal growth and materials characterization experience. From 1998 to 2007, Tom managed Picolight's Epitaxy operations, developing the oxide-confined vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and led the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) epitaxial growth fabrication and materials characterization. Tom continued in that role with JDSU from May 2007 to April 2009.

Prior to Picolight, Tom worked at Vixel Corporation from 1995 to 1998 where he researched the epitaxial growth of visible VCSEL using gas source MBE. Tom was a key member of the team involved in producing the world's first commercial VCSELs for data communications.

Tom received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1996. His doctoral research involved performing molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of infrared sensitive semiconductors at the Northrop Grumman Advanced Technology Development Center in Bethpage, NY.
